"Hemp is of first necessity to the wealth & protection of the country." -Thomas Jefferson, U.S. President on Hemp

Marijuana

When Obama was first elected, he held an online poll for what he would talk about in a national address. Of the 600,000 responses, the legalization of marijuana was the most requested. He shrugged it off as a joke, but shouldn't something this popular be taken a little more seriously?

With the country in its biggest recession in years, bailouts being handed out like condoms in high school, businesses sinking faster than Borack's approval rating, and plenty of other metaphors for a failing economy, America needs something to jumpstart it's economic recovery. Why not profit from the most widely used ellicit drug in the United States? Over 83 million people over the age of 12 have already tried it, and several million do it daily.

If taxed similarly to alcohol and tobacco (which are two businesses that aren't suffering), marijuana is estimated to bring in $6.2 million annually. With the money being wasted on incarcerating marijuna-related offenses (about $7.7 billion/year), we could cause a nearly $14 billion dollar/year swing in the economy.

Another factor is the amount of jobs that could be made available. Thousands of jobs could be generated from making more work for the American farmer, managing the dispenseries, and the processing and manufacturing of hemp products that we constantly have to outsource to use. Hemp, by the way, is a $500 billion dollar/year cash crop and we aren't making any use of it.

Its medical uses have been widely documented and we now know of over 250medical conditions marijuana can be used to treat. Unfortunately, only 14 states have allowed its use. You don't hate sick people, do you? Then why would you deny people a chance to get better?

From strictly a fiscal standpoint, marijuana should be legalized in America to help us out of the recession. When you combine all the money saved for housing these prisoners, the medicinal uses, the hemp products, and the thousands of jobs that could be created from pot, there's no real reason to prohibit its use.

"When I was a kid, I inhaled frequently. That was the point."

-Borack Obama, President of the United States

Some Not-So-Shocking Statistics

68,000-75,000 people are incarcerated for marijuana-related offense--90% of which are nonviolent crimes.

$7.7 billion is spent annually on prohibition enforcement

If taxed like alcohol and cigarettes, marijuana could generate $6.2 billion annually.

Worldwide, hemp is a $500,000,000,000 cash crop, but our laws keep us from taking advantage of it.

Medicinally, marijuana can be used to treat over 250 medical conditions.

yes

i say yes only for medical purposes. to help the sick people.

....

I think if you can go and die for your country without your own permission, you should be allowed to do things legally. If that means being allowed to smoke weed, so be it. Give it the same rules that alcohol have.

God made all good things on this earth such as natural,
home grown herbs. I don't see anything wrong with
marijuana as long as people use it wisely and plus, it
does good for the cancer patients as well.

Personally I don't think it should be legalized. If I was a patient in a medical facility, I would not want my provider to be stoned out of their mind taking care of me. By legalizing it, it opens up the door for more reckless behavior.

i know that there is some medical use for this, but I am one who particularly do not care. I beleive that it is up to each individual state of what they believe should be legalized.

Definetly

I believe it should be leagalized it's organic so there are no strange chemicals.. Smoking a ciggarette is worse for you.. no side effects like drinking would have on you.. And there are alot more problems than smoking a little bit of pot

we got bigger problems than smoking weed

I personally could care less if this was to legalized, but I do believe that it could boost the economy a little bit, and we need that. I think that its a lot safer to smoke weed then to be getting drunk and wrecking your car or so high on pills that the person can't move. I also think that we got a lot bigger problems than worrying about who is selling and smoking, we have young girls that come up missing everyday and women that are being rapped and the people who commits these kinds of crimes get less of jail sentence than someone selling or smoking.

Nope

First thing first- weed can only treat syptoms of cancers and illnesses. It does not cure anything. There are pain medicines out there that does the same thing. I don't want to have to go out a door and have people blowing smoke from weed in all over the place like they do cigerettes. It's gross.

I think it should be legal its been shown that it doesnt have hardly any negative effects on people.

Yes

The government should make it avaible for people in pain and that need to gain weight. This druug is safer then any of the narcotics that are out there. Weed does not make you do stupid things it makes you lazy. When you drink you are going to do stupid stuff things you most likely are going to want to forget you did. I have never had this experence when i used to smoke weed.

Wow!

First off the title saying God made, man made beer, in God we trust, technically everything we have now is from God and I wonder how many true christians are going to get persuaded by this title? Everybody knows why people want weed to be legalized and it is not to help the economy. Saying that it helps the economy is just an argument excuse for drug heads. People need to grow up and get a life outside of smoking weed. For medical reasons fine, but for a drugy to make that an excuse for them? Enough said.

Legalize It!

The American industry should just legalize it and get over it. Whether it is for medicinal purposes or recreational purposes the government should just tax it like it does beer and cigarettes and everything else in this country. I don't believe in doing this because I think it leads to worse drugs in the long run but thats a person's choice if they want to do it.

3.11.2010

legalize weed?! hmm...

i agree, we could create a bounce back in the economy.

If its for medical.

Weed should be legal for those who needs it then it should be legal to help fight cancer.

Really don't know

I mean i don't do it myself but i can't judge others that do it. I know they use it for people that are fighting cancer so i think that is for a good cause. but if people want to be able buy it with out getting jail time then if that is what they want then let them have it .

3.10.2010

For Real?

I really do not care one way or another. If its for medicine reasons, then ok my uncle has cancer and he could use for that reason. It's not up to me what another person does! Everyone has the right to do what they want. So dont judge!

Mary Jane to the Rescue!

I think marijuana should only be used for medical reasons. I think people would abuse it and we'd have an epidemic of DUI's compared to what we have now. I tried smoking pot when I was a teenager and it's high-ly over-rated...HaHa. Seriously though don't we all have to grow up sometime and find better ways to relax!!
